UFC 99 Results: Live Updates of Franklin vs. Silva, Kongo, Cain, Cro Cop

FanHouse will have live UFC 99 results for all of Saturday's UFC 99 fights, as well as a live blog and round-by-round updates of the televised main card. Fights featured on the UFC 99 card include Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva, Cheick Kongo vs. Cain Velasquez and the return of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who is taking on Mostapha Al Turk.

I'm no fan of Silva but he'll win by K.O. probably in the 1st round. Cain has had time to prepare and Cheik has not. Velasquez will take Congo convincingly. About the others, it's to early in their career or it's too late to care.

All-round Bravo floors defending champions

West Indies 156 for 3 (Bravo 66*, Simmons 44) beat India 153 for 7 (Yuvraj 67, Yusuf 31, Bravo 4-38, Edwards 3-24) by seven wickets

An under-tested India ran into a red-hot West Indies, who didn't even need a significant contribution from Chris Gayle during a tense chase. Dwayne Bravo was his usual top-dawg self today, taking four wickets to keep India down and then resurrecting the chase after a subdued Gayle had got out early, with an innings that was both aesthetic and cruel.

By the time Bravo came out to bat, India had made a smart start to their defence of a fighting 151. After Zaheer Khan went for two boundaries in the first over, MS Dhoni chose to give Gayle no pace. Three of the Powerplay overs were bowled by spinners, and two by Irfan Pathan who didn't come on to the bat either. Harbhajan Singh, especially, fast-tracked Gayle's downfall, bowling a maiden to him to finish the Powerplays. Gayle had reached 20 off 23, after which frustration got the better of him, and he top-edged Yusuf Pathan, who had done well to keep him quiet in his first two overs.

Quietly, though, No. 3 Lendl Simmons, who had earlier taken a blinder, had quietly played himself in. And just when it seemed West Indies were out of it, having got off to a slow start, Bravo changed the pace of the game. With Bravo came more intent in the running and odd boundaries that kept West Indies with the rate. His batting was a treat for the eye. He often went inside-out to the spinners, stepping out and clearing extra cover in one fluid motion.

Pragyan Ojha, who was kept back until Gayle got out, got the treatment in the ninth over, and Yusuf was late-cut just as effectively in the 10th. There was nothing frenetic about this partnership, no undue risks or big hitting, even as the required run-rate stayed around nine and 10. It was almost as if they knew something that others didn't. When Bravo drove Harbhajan over extra cover in the 12th over, followed by more good running, West Indies had reached 80, and the target looked within reach.

When Dhoni brought back his fast bowlers, it was Simmons' turn to pick up the pace, as boundaries in the next two overs kept West Indies abreast. With the second four, a vicious pull off Ishant Sharma, Simmons moved into the 40s, almost unnoticed. When Ojha got Simmons for 43 in the next over, West Indies still needed 54 off 33. But it was also the time Bravo found another gear. The next ball he lofted for a six down the ground, ensuring there was no break in the momentum. Harbhajan bowled a tight next over, after which West Indies were left needing 39 off 24.

Even that couldn't get anything rash out of Bravo, who kept hitting straight, or over extra cover. With Shivnarine Chanderpaul joining in and hitting unorthodox shots like only he can, it became a stroll towards the end. Quite fittingly, Bravo ended it with a six off Zaheer Khan, over extra cover, elbow high for the pose.

Like the one against Australia, even this win was originally set up by fast bowlers relishing the lively conditions. But unlike then, their bowling was backed up by solid fielding today, but for just one lapse. It was that dropped chance off Yuvraj Singh, when he was 32 off 27, that made the game close.

This time it was Jerome Taylor's opening partner, Edwards, who put West Indies ahead. The tone, though, was set by Taylor in the first over, troubling Gautam Gambhir with the bouncers. Edwards took the cue, and removed his Deccan Chargers team-mate, Rohit Sharma, with a bouncer. He troubled Suresh Raina too with the short-pitched stuff until the latter played back to a full delivery and edged it to Denesh Ramdin.

It was now time for the fielders to stand up, as Simmons took a superb running-back-and-diving catch to send Gambhir back. It was a short delivery again, the first Gambhir faced from Bravo - 29 for 3 in the fifth over.

Yuvraj and Dhoni had no choice but to consolidate. Gayle and Kieron Pollard slipped in five overs for just 20 runs. Under pressure to get going, Dhoni cut Bravo straight to sweeper-cover. Two balls later, Yuvraj picked the same fielder out, but was dropped by Andre Fletcher. India would have been 71 for 5, but for the drop. Whereupon, Yuvraj played a little gem to pull India out of all sorts of trouble, but it would stay the second-best effort of the night.

His hitting was clean, there was no need to be cute as he and Yusuf threatened to run away with the game. But Edwards finished off what he started, taking Yuvraj with a bouncer in the 18th over, after which India got only 23 off the last 14 balls.

MLB Opening Day 2009 roundup

The tarp was covering the infield at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati Monday morning, and rain delayed the Mets' expected start by 10 minutes.

Baseball's Opening Day is in many ways an unofficial national holiday, the start of another marathon season for the sport affectionately known as America's pastime. It is a day when all teams begin with the optimism, and the hope that this could be the year they win the World Series, except maybe if you are the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Many years, Opening Day doubles as a harbinger that spring is around the corner, with the summer soon to follow. Unfortunately, that assessment does not hold true this season. It seems the prevailing theme this Opening Day will be the weather. As of 10:30 a.m. on Monday, two games have already been canceled. The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays contest, a rematch of last season's AL Championship Series, has been washed away due to heavy rain. Meanwhile, the meeting between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox has been postponed due to show showers. With cold weather and precipitation in the forecast throughout the Northeast and Midwest, more postponements could follow.

The season officially kicked off Sunday night, as the Atlanta Braves defeated the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1, at Citizens Bank Ballpark. The Phillies started the night with a celebratory tone, after claiming the city's first major sports title since 1983, but the mood quickly soured and cheers turned to boos, as they often do in the City of Brotherly Love. The Bravos crashed the Phillies' party, thanks to strong debuts from some of its newest additions -- pitcher Derek Lowe, rookie center fielder Jordan Schafer -- and reliable vets -- Brian McCann and Jeff Francoeur.

Braves pitcher Derek Lowe, who was on the Mets' radar for much of the offseason as a free agent, shut out the Phillies over eight innings on Sunday night, allowing just two hits.

Save for four teams and those whose games are suspended, the rest of baseball gets underway on Monday. The hometown Mets and Yankees both start the season on the road, though weather may play a part in their season debuts, as well.

Mets beat writer Brian Costa is at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, where rain and possibly snow in the forecast could threaten the scheduled 1:10 p.m. first pitch between the Mets and Reds.

UPDATE, 1:20 p.m.: Follow all the action from Cincinnati as Costa blogs live from the Mets season opener.

UPDATE, 12:49 p.m.: It is still raining in Cincinnati, but the tarp is coming off the field. The first game has been delayed until 1:40 p.m.

UPDATE: Rain has started to fall in Cincinnati, but as of right now the game will start as scheduled.

The rainy weather did not stop some Mets fans from taking the trip out to Ohio to see their team on Opening Day:

Wii Sports Resort With MotionPlus Coming in July?

July 10...a mere three months away!

July 10...a mere three months away!

Could Wii MotionPlus finally have a release date?

A picture was taken at an Amsterdam gaming retailer which shows a much-hyped Wii Sports Resort coming bundled with the Wii MotionPlus accessory being released on July 10, 2009. It also shows the Wii Motion Plus “Controller” being sold as a separate item as well. This could mean that it would be a stand-alone accessory, or that it could be bundled with a Wii remote – hopefully the former.

At the last E3, Wii Sports Resort was said to be released in Spring 2009. It has been also rumored that Wii MotionPlus has been delayed since it is now Spring, and we have no firm release date. However, in an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime later said that the Spring line-up has not been fully announced.

Currently, in addition to Wii Sports Resort, the list of games that have been announced to use Wii MotionPlus include EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and Red Steel 2.

Powerade intramurals..next stop Vanderbilt

On over 50 campuses across the country, CBS College Sports and POWERade have collaborated to enhance the average student's intramural athletic experience.

Lucky for us, their next target is Vanderbilt.

"We're very excited to have Vanderbilt University on board this year and build the program up," said Lindsay Codd, regional marketing coordinator for CBS College Sports. "Vandy was a natural fit for the program with its school spirit and geographic location."

The program began in 2007 when CBS College Sports and POWERade teamed up with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. Their goal was simple: to sponsor and enhance intramural programs while generating brand awareness for POWERade. After a successful opening year, the program grew immensely.

"What began as a test pilot on seven campuses, POWERade College Intramurals has grown to be a national program on over 50 campuses," said Codd, who oversees the Vanderbilt initiative. "Our program has come a long way in the last few seasons and we're excited to see where it will go in the future."

Although intramural basketball only started a week ago, the impact of the sponsorship has already been felt by many of the participating athletes. In addition to providing new jerseys and free POWERade to Vanderbilt's Recreational Center, the program also features a newly launched social networking site designed to be the central hub for campus intramurals.

With 125 basketball teams registered for this season, enthusiasm and participation is high, but team-to-team communication is incredibly limited - important information like league standings or scheduling changes are often only provided to each team's captain. With the Web site providing this information to every registered athlete, Codd believes it has the potential to make the intramural experience more organized and interactive.

"Our hope is that intramural departments and athletes will use (the site) as their main forum for all things intramural. Each season the site grows stronger as intramural departments use the website to post schedules, standings and upcoming events," Codd said.

In addition to essential intramural basketball information, the site also features photo and video updates from events throughout the week. According to Codd, athletes will be able to log into the site and see highlights of their games as well as others around the league.

"We wanted to create a space for those athletes to come together to view game footage, talk about the leagues and connect with other intramural players from across the nation."

While CBS College Sports and POWERade raise brand awareness on Vanderbilt's campus, the intramural experience grows stronger. Increased interaction on the new social networking site makes each league more competitive and each game more meaningful.

US Figure Skating Championship 2009 to be held in cleveland

The best skaters in the country are getting together in Cleveland for the 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championships which start this Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena. Twelve champions will be crowned in three divisions (Novice, Junior, and Senior) for Ladies, Mens, Pairs, and Ice Dancing. The top skaters will go on to compete in the World Figure Skating Championships later this year.

Unfortunately, the five-time U.S. dance team of Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto had to withdraw from the competition last Thursday because Agosto hasn't completely healed from his back injury. They were hoping to become the first six-time dance champions in U.S. Figure Skating history. They are currently tied with four other couples with five. Belbin and Agosto are also Olympic silver medalists.
